A 17-year-old girl grows up in an impoverished family and is placed in a home for young women. Refusing to submit to the rules, she attracts attention when she has an affair with a man. To subjugate her, she is forced to undergo compulsory sterilization. This portrays a dark chapter in the history of post-war Sweden when, in the 1950s, thousands of Swedish women from poor families were sterilized – part of a closed-door agreement between doctors and politicians to keep the birth rate low for low-income families.
